Two Portsmouth musicians performed a haunting classical recital at Fishbourne Roman Palace, near Chichester to raise cash for the sites development fund. Saxophonist Amonn AL-Mahrouq from Southsea and Pianist Christopher Scobie from Copnor performed a moving concert called Music amongst the Mosaics. They presented a wonderful programme of music ranging from Bach and Mozart to Prokofiev, and which also included a tribute to the Beatles and Paul McCartney's 64th birthday, against the backdrop of ancient artefacts.
The concert took place in the timber buildings which house the in-situ mosaics that are in urgent need of a financial boost to save them from further damage due to sunlight erosion. David Rudkin Director of Fishbourne Roman Palace said “It’s wonderful that local musicians such as Amonn and Chris have supported The Million Pound Mosaic appeal this evening. We need to improve three vital aspects of the Roman Palace to develop the area so that our unique site is suitable for a 21st century audience.”
“These projects will include continued conservation of what is the largest domestic Roman building in Britain and to improve both physical and intellectual access which will include an education workshop and a conservation laboratory.2 He added “All of this will cost about £4million, so concerts like tonight are very important in helping us to maintain such a significant archaeological site which we are lucky to have on our doorstep.”
Amonn and Chris perform many concerts throughout the South and appear regularly at Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral. Amonn said “Both Chris and I love to play and what better way to present our music whilst raising money for good causes.
