A Tutorial on Figured Bass by musician Amonn AL-Mahrouq

The table below explains the intervals that needed to be added above the bass note to make the chords into their respective positions. This method of notation was widely used during the Baroque Period but died our towards the end of the eighteenth century.

Root Position Triad 5/3
First Inversion Triad 6/3
Second Inversion Triad 6/4

However the modern convension of notation is :

Root Position Triad Both figures omitted
First Inversion Triad Indicated by 6 - the 3 is omitted
Second Inversion Triad 6/4
