A Tutorial on how to read music by musician Amonn AL-Mahrouq

All music is written on a stave, consisting of five lines.

an example of a musical stave

A clef (which means key) is placed on the staff to fix the position of a certain note. For example, the G clef (treble clef) fixes the second line as G.

g or treble clef

and the F clef (Bass clef) fixes the fourth line as F.

f or bass clef

There are seven letters in the musical alphabet (A, B, C, D, E, F, G). These are repeated over and over. The great stave consists of two seperate five line staves, the lower using the bass clef and the upper the treble clef.

The C in the middle writen twice on ledger lines is known as middle C because it is the C closest to the middle of the piano keyboard.
