What is Web Programming

• A set of ordered instructions to a computer carrying out a specific task

There are many different programming languages you can use to create your web applications eg. java script , and php scritps

Writing a web based application involves:

• Writing the application code.
• Testing/debugging your application.
• Maintenance of your application code.

Your web application source code, will be written in a web programming language such as php , asp etc. These programming languages enable you to write and structure your code in the language you have chosen.

Some languages like php, are compiled before they are sent to the users browser and some are not like htm.

You should be proficient with your chosen language - writing software applications is an art and only experience will enable you to become a good programmer.

Good web applications should be:

• reliable
• robust
• efficient
• Portable
• Be designed well
• Expandable
• Contain comments for you and other programmers to read in the future

You should not expect to write applications once, the entire process will require time and lots of patience.

Every programming language will have its strengths and weaknesses - depending on what exactly your requirements are will depend on the language you choose to use, for example C++ is is an incredibly powerful language however complex to learn whilst PHP is easier to learn but maybe less powerful.

The best approach to Web Application Development is to split up the task into two:

• Web design
• Programming, including Database Programming

With this approach you have specialist designers working on the layout and appearance of your web application and specialist programmers working on the code development - you will find this effective as most programmers do not make good designers and the same is true of designer, they often are not good programmers.
