What is Linux?
The Linux core operating system was engineered by a talented software developer called Linus Torvalds at the university of Helsinki in Finland as hobby. He already had a strong interest in unix systems, such as Minix but wanted to build a new system exceeding the existing standards. He started in 1991, the first release was 0.02 and he continued his work producing version 1.0 of the Linux kernel in 1994.
The Linux Operating System is:
- graphical operating system
- extremely flexible
- robust and light on system resources
- extremely stable
- easy to use
- a viable alternative to Microsoft Windows
This kernel or core is the heart of all Linux Operating Systems in use. Originally it was designed to be:
- reliable
- fast
- efficient
- low in cost
Linux is released under the GNU GPL and the source code is (Open Source) meaning that anyone can contribute and develop it further. This is great for companies and developers as it means they are free to develop their own version of the Linux Operating System for their own internal/external needs.
It is a now a viable alternative to Microsoft Windows in all types of environments, for example:
- it's a fantastic server
- incredibly reliable therefore good for home/office use thanks to it being extremely easy to set up and use.
Being Open Source, the Linux Kernel and distributions are frequently updated by a community of millions of software engineers and enthusiasts.
This operating system is aligned with the Portable Operating System standard user and programming interfaces meaning that any developer can write code/programmes that can easily be moved to any other.
Linux contains all the applications you will need for everyday life, including open office - this is a free office application which includes a spreadsheet, database, word processor and presentation package comparable if not better than microsoft office because is uses odf (open document format). There are various other applications including an e-mail client, web browser, anti virus protection, ftp utility etc.
Linux is used by:
- thousands of companies
- educational establishments
- research and development institutes
- students
- colleges
- individuals
- even primary schools
- enterprises
- hosting companies
- mobile phone manufactures
- many hand held hardware devices
Linux is continuing to grow at an unrepresented rate and now has the backing of major companies such as IBM, HP
